Just Like the Plan

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

What happens when you take 13 children under the age of five and get them together for a group portrait?  Well, a lot of things but two certainty is that it’s going to result in some very cute pictures and some chaos.

This is the second year I’ve shot Kathy’s kids for Christmas.  She watches these 13 little ones every day and for Christmas they get matching PJ’s and a picture to send home to Mom and Dad.

My plan with kids is “wow” them with my charm right away.  Don’t these guys look amazed?

I started off with the individual shots first. Based on the early results it was a great idea.

By the time I had gone through all 13 kids though things were taking a turn for the worse.

This is How We Planned It!

Still sort of a cute shot. It’s kids being kids, ya know? Last years shoot went a little better… but the kids were also older

On the technical side this was all done with a couple strands of Christmas lights and some Speedlights with white bounce umbrellas. Coming up in 2010, I plan on shooting some “behind the scenes” video on shoots like this. Got my new Canon Vixia HD camcorder sitting right here next to me.

I Believe in Christmas

This is a shot of my daughter from last Christmas enjoying to beauty of our tree. I probably posted it last year, but I thought it was fitting to repost it again on this Christmas Eve.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and have time to take a break from the hustle and bustle to see the true meaning of what the holiday season is all about.

I’m hoping Santa leaves some camera gear under the tree! ;)

Reindeer Parking Only

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I originally took this photo a year ago at the Cleveland Metropark Zoo.  My children were in the Wolf Lodge visiting with Santa and I had wandered outside to see if there was anything interesting to take pictures of.  Don’t worry, Carter and Paige weren’t alone.  In fact, they were probably better off since they were under the supervision of their mother.  ;)

Right outside the Wolf Exhibit is the reindeer display.  I guess they keep it close by so they are easier to feed to the wolves.  Crazy zookeepers.  Anyhow, it appears that Santa had his reindeer parked there that day as well, but I didn’t know that until much later.

I snapped this as a throwaway shot and just went on about my business.   I didn’t know I had captured Rudolph until I got home that night and started editing pictures.  I can only guess that my shutter click triggered his nose to light for one brief second (Pocket Wizards?).

This year, I’ve had a half dozen emails asking about this picture.  All children wanting a picture of Rudolph left under the tree from Santa as a little extra bit of proof that he really does exist.   I’ve answered every single one of those emails with a smile.

If any of you want this picture – here it is.  Right click away and take it.  All I ask is that you leave a Merry Christmas message in the comments. ;)

Kicking off the Christmas Season

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

It’s that time of year that I gather up the wife and children and force them pose for a picture we can use as our Christmas Card.  Remember – if you don’t do it then Santa won’t come!

So it’s normally an exercise in organized chaos , we just decided to make the shot organized chaos.  Here are a couple of outtakes from the event.  I’ll post the finished card later when start to mail them out.

I’d also like to point out that this is in our living room. Not some fancy studio space. People often wonder when I say that I’m on site photographer what can be achieved. Well, stuff just like this…it just takes a well thought out plan. ;)
