Obvisiouly there is a difference, but which do you prefer?
Granted neither shot is some award winning children’s portrait, but this is about the differences in technology.
One image was shot using my 5D mkII as a RAW file and converted to grayscale using the LR preset. Nothing else was adjusted – straight out of camera to B/W. The other image was shot on Kodak TMax 400 film with a Mamiya 645 Pro TL medium format camera. It was scanned, and only touched up for dust.
Both were shot at ISO 400, 1/60, f/4. The 5D image was created with a 100mm lens. The Mamiya with a 150mm. Pretty similar when you consider the crop factor for the negative sizes.
Do you prefer one over the other?

I like B better. There is more contrast. I feel as though the image pops a little better. The “blur” from the dof is better too. Before reading when I first saw this, I almost thought you were using a program to sharpen the little girl into focus on the first image, like she wasn’t supposed to be out of focus. I like the deepness of the skin tones in the film image as well. All that being said…I love the look of film. When tow images are side by side, I think I am usually drawn to the film image. After seeing Hunters work as of late and yours, I’m thinking of looking into investing in film. There’s something about it digital can never touch. Just my 2 cents
I agree. Film has an “it” factor that I just don’t see in digital but maybe that’s because I spend so much more time on a film image in developing and such.
